Some of our Best Dressed entries on Pet Day, Fergus and Lily.

Kia ora koutou,

After a windy start to the week, and no power, it was lovely to have our annual pet day on Wednesday. We loved seeing such a variety of animals come along - spiders, chickens, dogs, lambs, a horse and a teddy bear! Thanks to Georgie for the organisation on the day, Julie for organising the lamb drinking competition, and Kurt for setting up our pens. Plus a big thanks to our judges. It was lovely to have Neil and Margaret Evans, Alison Sloss and Leon Parish to judge on the day. They all have strong links to our school.

I want to acknowledge ‘World Teachers Day’ this Friday. I feel so grateful to have such wonderful, dedicated teachers to work alongside. It really is special to be in a school where everyone is so passionate about our students and their learning. Thank you to Kelly, Penny, Georgie, Chantelle, and our relievers Liz and Elizabeth. Also thank you to Rachael who is our Learning Support Coordinator. Rachael works across 5 schools, and we are lucky enough to have her at Omihi each Wednesday afternoon. We will be having a special morning tea this week to celebrate them.

Thanks to Dave Elphinstone who has collected our Subway orders over the last couple of years. Dave is no longer able to do this. Celebrating the fundraising efforts of our online auction.

Kia ora koutou

I hope you had a lovely two weeks with your whānau. We went away in our caravan for the second week, and it was great to get in the outdoors and explore around Hanmer Springs and Kaikoura.

Some exciting news to share with you to start the term. Bryleigh is expecting her second baby in term 1 next year. We are thrilled for Bryleigh, Ryan and Maia. We will be advertising for an Acting Office Manager to work with Bryleigh one day a week in term 1, then for three days for term 2 and 3, whilst Bryleigh is on maternity leave. If you are interested please feel free to get in touch with me to find out more. The ad will be in the next newsletter.

You will see below that we have a number of things on this term. We hope to see you at some of the events, and feel free to pop in and see us any time.

Kia ora koutou,

What a treat to be able to see our tamariki in action at the Top Team Challenge last week. They were split into groups with children from some of our local schools, and I was really proud of their perseverance, resilience and team work. It was nice to see them shining as leaders.

Thanks to Anna Williams, who has put in a huge amount of work to gather auction items for our online auction, and thanks to Bryleigh who collated this for us. It is now live on our Facebook page, and finishes this Thursday at 8pm. We would love your support to share it around for us, and feel free to pop in a bid or two.

This is our last newsletter of the term. We look forward to seeing parents this week for our Year 6-8 speech competition on Thursday, and our junior assembly on Friday.

Our new bus driver Emma with her boys Alex, Theo, Arty and Michael.

I’d like to welcome Emma Hughes-Games onto our staff as our new bus driver. Emma and Fi will be sharing the role. The three of us are completing a number of unit standards over the next three days to complete our bus drivers licence training. There is a lot that it entails, so we appreciate these two ladies for what they are doing for our school.

Often parents say to me that they ask their child what did they learn, or what did they do at school today, and they say ‘nothing’. I found these suggestions of questions and conversation starters to ask when your child comes home, and I thought they might be helpful:

  • Did anything funny happen at school today?

  • I was thinking about you! Want to know what I was thinking about?

  • Did you make any mistakes today? Great!

  • What do you need right now? I’m here for your tears, quiet time, or a chat.

  • What did you read at school today?

  • Who did you play with? What games did you play?

  • Tell me about the best part of your day.

  • Can you show me something you learned today?

  • Was maths easy or hard today? Why?

  • What was the hardest thing you had to do today?

It is for our Year 5-8 students, and we need to be there by 12.20pm. Mrs Lucas will drive the bus and leave school at 11.50am. We are also looking for some parents who can take cars. If you are able to do this, can you please email Miss Fletcher and let her know. All children will need a change of clothes, as there are water based activities that they will get wet in. We won’t be back until 3.20pm, so children will need to be picked up from school or from the Amberley Domain at 2.45pm.

Due to the Top Team Event there will be no afternoon bus on Wednesday September 6th.
